When Stillness Becomes Monumental: Julian Voss-Andreae at NordArt

This summer, Julian Voss-Andreae returns to NordArt with two major sculptures that speak directly to the core of his practice: the tension between physical presence, psychological interiority, and the elusive structures that shape human perception.
Held annually at the historic Carlshütte in northern Germany, NordArt has established itself as one of Europe’s most significant international exhibitions of contemporary art, drawing close to 200,000 visitors each season. The 2026 edition opens on June 6 and remains on view through October 4, 2026, spanning nearly four months of public exhibition.
At the center of Voss-Andreae’s presentation is Contemplation, a newly completed 12-foot-tall sculptural head that commands one of the exhibition’s most visible outdoor placements. Installed within a water feature and framed by a reflective pool, the work changes depending on light, movement, and the viewer’s position. Reflection becomes part of the sculpture itself — an extension of the artist’s ongoing exploration of perception, consciousness, and the invisible forces that shape human experience.
Also on view is the final exemplar of Contrapposto, a 7.5-foot standing female figure inspired by one of the oldest principles of classical sculpture. With her weight shifted naturally through the hips and legs, and one arm lifted over her head, the work draws from the language of antiquity while unmistakably belonging to Voss-Andreae’s contemporary vocabulary. The sculpture captures a moment of poised imbalance, where anatomical precision gives way to something more psychological, almost ephemeral.
Together, Contemplation and Contrapposto offer two distinct but deeply connected investigations into form: one inward, meditative, and architectural; the other bodily, sensual, and rooted in art history. One looks like thought made monumental. The other reminds us that the body has been thinking longer than the mind likes to admit.
Following their presentation at NordArt, both sculptures are scheduled to travel to Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, where the next edition of the renowned sculpture triennial will take place from May 1 through October 31, 2027.
For collectors, curators, and those fortunate enough to visit northern Germany this summer, NordArt offers a rare opportunity to experience these works before they continue their European journey.
