Hohmann Fine Art, in collaboration with Grit Development and the Kimpton Rowan Hotel, has unveiled another remarkable public art installation in downtown Palm Springs. The latest addition is "Meat," a striking sculpture by the renowned Czech artist David Cerny. Temporarily on loan from the artist, this thought-provoking piece arrives just in time for Desert X, offering both locals and visitors an opportunity to experience Cerny’s provocative artistry up close. This 17ft sculpture was recently exhibited at CECUT in Mexico (2023) and earlier this year at The Crocker Art Museum, in Sacramento in a solo museum exhibition.
Cerny, best known in Palm Springs for his beloved sculpture series "The Babies," which adorned the city for years—one of which remains on the balcony of the Kimpton Rowan—has gained international recognition for his bold and controversial work. His sculptures are often described as witty, kinetic, crass, and deeply provocative, challenging viewers with their commentary on social, political, and historical themes.
Trained at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, Cerny further honed his craft through prestigious programs in Switzerland and the United States, including the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York. His work can be found in major public spaces around the world, with 23 installations in his hometown of Prague alone. Most recently, he unveiled a major sculpture for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and a 25’ steel portrait of David Lynch in Santa Monica. Hohmann Fine Art, with galleries in both Palm Desert and Palm Springs, represents Cerny in the U.S.
About “Meat”
The automobile has long been more than just a means of transportation—it has become a symbol of status, identity, and even personal belief systems. Cerny’s "Meat" challenges this cultural phenomenon, drawing parallels between the cult-like devotion to cars in America and the fervor of religious fanaticism. The sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the transformation of the automobile from a practical necessity into a divisive status symbol that shapes societal perceptions and hierarchies.
