Press Release - for immediate release

Numerous artists have drawn inspiration from quantum physics, but few can truly call themselves quantum physicists. Julian Voss-Andreae is one of those rare individuals who bridges both worlds. Born into an artistic family in Hamburg, Germany—his mother a violinist, his father a filmmaker—he was encouraged to explore his creative talents. However, his curiosity led him to pursue quantum physics, and he studied in Berlin and Edinburgh before ultimately completing his graduate work in Vienna under Anton Zeilinger, who was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Voss-Andreae contributed to groundbreaking research that now appears in physics textbooks. His team successfully demonstrated how the familiar world of our everyday experience emerges from the counterintuitive realm of quantum physics by showcasing quantum behavior in the largest particles observed at the time—soccer-ball-shaped molecules known as “buckyballs.” To this day, universities worldwide invite him to speak or participate in research, including a four-year NSF-funded project that explored biomimetic self-replicating materials using DNA.

In 2001, Voss-Andreae moved to the United States, where he earned his BFA in sculpture at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. Here, he seamlessly merged his scientific background with his passion for art and quickly gained recognition. Even as a student, he received his first public commissions, and his innovative sculptures soon went viral, capturing the attention of galleries and collectors worldwide.

Today, his sculptures are featured in prestigious private and public collections across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. He has received multiple awards and widespread critical acclaim. His work often requires months of production, with collectors eagerly waiting to acquire one of his highly sought-after pieces. Among his most celebrated concepts are his “disappearing” sculptures, which play with perception in a way that embodies quantum principles. Constructed from precisely spaced stainless steel slices, these sculptures shift from solid to nearly invisible, depending on the viewer’s perspective. This technique is deeply rooted in his background, drawing from the mathematical wave functions of quantum physics and reimagining them as human figures moving through space and time.

Most recently, Voss-Andreae’s work reached an even broader audience when a social media post featuring the prototype of his "Quantum Astronaut" went viral. Tapping into the public’s renewed enthusiasm for space exploration, the video amassed millions of views—now totaling over 90 million—further cementing his reputation as an artist who captures the imagination of a global audience.

A shared history connects Voss-Andreae with Christian Hohmann, the founder of HOHMANN Fine Art. Both hail from Hamburg, Germany, where Hohmann was once the city’s youngest gallery owner. He began representing Voss-Andreae more than a decade ago, placing his sculptures in prestigious private collections and public spaces worldwide. Despite their long collaboration, this exhibition marks the artist’s first expansive solo show at HOHMANN.

“There was never enough work available to put together an exhibition,” explains Hohmann. “Many times, sculptures would sell before they even arrived at the gallery. Especially in the past few years, after The Astronaut went viral, collectors sometimes had to wait up to a year for their sculptures to be completed. It took a concerted effort—and the generosity of several collectors who agreed to let us display their pieces before delivery—to make this exhibition possible. We are thrilled to finally see it all come together after postponing it twice.”

The exhibition will be on view at HOHMANN Fine Art’s Palm Desert gallery from April 7 through May 15. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM and on weekends by appointment. The opening reception will be invitation-only, but fans of the artist are encouraged to register for a planned public Q&A with Voss-Andreae on the gallery's website: www.hohmann.art/voss-andreae
