Larry Kagan is a distinctive figure in contemporary art, one of only a handful of artists worldwide who use shadows as their medium. Visitors to his exhibitions are often astonished to discover that the images on the wall are not drawn but instead created entirely by light and shadow. His sculptures—seemingly chaotic metal constructions—conceal their hidden imagery until a precisely positioned light source transforms them, revealing striking shadow compositions.

In the Shadows

HOHMANN presents a solo exhibition by Larry Kagan

Palm Desert, CA – Hohmann Fine Art is pleased to announce In the Shadows, a solo exhibition featuring the innovative shadow sculptures of renowned artist Larry Kagan. The exhibition will run from Monday March 3 through March 28 at Hohmann Fine Art’s Palm Desert gallery.

Born in 1946 in a refugee camp in Germany, Larry Kagan's life was shaped by the shadows of history. As the child of Holocaust survivors, he grew up acutely aware of absence—of the family members who were no longer there. This theme of presence and disappearance runs through his work, where intricate steel structures, seemingly chaotic at first glance, cast strikingly precise shadows when illuminated from the right angle. “Making these images, to me, they were appropriate,” Kagan has said. “They were shadows. They existed, but they didn’t really. As soon as the light goes off, there’s nothing there.”

Kagan’s sculptures challenge perception, merging structure and light to create ephemeral, almost magical imagery. What appears as an abstract tangle of steel suddenly reveals recognizable forms—portraits, everyday objects, and iconic imagery—through carefully engineered lighting. His unique fusion of sculpture and shadow has been developed over 25 years, with each work requiring months of meticulous planning and execution.

A sculptor with a background in engineering and architecture, Kagan's work has been widely exhibited, including a solo show at the Montclair Art Museum, where it captivated audiences with its blend of precision, playfulness, and depth. His process is both time-consuming and deeply rewarding, requiring custom lighting solutions to bring his sculptures to life.

In the Shadows marks Kagan’s first solo exhibition at Hohmann Fine Art. Gallery director Christian Hohmann notes, “Larry’s work is mesmerizing—it draws people in with its mystery and ingenuity. His sculptures challenge the way we think about perception, light, and materiality. We are thrilled to present this extraordinary body of work in Palm Desert.”

The exhibition will be on display from March 3 through March 28 at Hohmann Fine Art, located at 44651 Village Court in palm Desert. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and by appointment on weekends.
